Celebrate Library Giving Day all Month with the Aurora Public Library District

Every day there are children across the City of Aurora who struggle with basic literacy skills, financial literacy understanding, language barriers and other socio-economic struggles.

And every day, the Aurora Public Library District and Foundation (APLDF) provide outreach services, literacy training and materials, English as a second language (ESL) training, summer reading programs and the mobile services of the Bookmobile and the Mini B to reach populations of kids and adults who desperately need these resources.

To help support children and families in Aurora, the APLDF is joining a nationwide fundraising and awareness campaign called Library Giving Day which kicks off on April 4th, 2023.

This will be a month-long fundraising effort that will continue through Library Week and end on April 28th.

APLD Foundation Chairperson, Christina Campos, says the Foundation has been providing underserved children and families with Literacy Packets that help them gain reading skills since 2020.  The materials are distributed through a partnership with the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry, the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and through area preschools.  More than 12,000 books and other literacy materials have been distributed directly to the families that need them.

Additionally, the Library’s summer reading program is open to all kids in the district.  The books and crafts made available through the program encourage a lifelong love of books and reading that result in kids being more likely to become lifelong learners.

“All funds received for Library Giving Day will support our Literacy Packet Program and our Summer Reading Program, both directly benefit children in Aurora,” said Christina.

The Foundation is encouraging community members to consider making a one-time or even a monthly donation to help support children in the Aurora area.  Sign up to be a monthly donor at www.APLDgiving.givesmart.com and be entered into a drawing for great prizes including $100, $50 & $25 gift cards or an APLD blanket!  Donations can be made directly to the program by visiting www.apldgiving.givesmart.com.

“Without the support of our wonderful community members, these programs would not be possible.  Now more than ever, we need to grow these programs to reach more children who have limited access to reading and literacy opportunities,” Christina said.
